Hey Pete, great to have you! Sorry I took so long getting in Anyway, let's get started! You make Jaffa Cakes, which is seriously cool, so, what's your Job title? | 01 Aug 2005 18:37 |
pete |
Plant line Manager is my title, i have 29 reports and i report to my boss who is a Business Unit Manager who reports to an Operations Manager who in turn reports to the factory Manager. | 01 Aug 2005 18:41 |
James |
Wow, that's a bit to get your head around! So what does your job involve - we heard "Jaffa 18" mentioned but what exactly is it? | 01 Aug 2005 18:43 |
pete |
Jaffa 18 is a manufacturing plant that just makes Jaffa Cakes 24 hours a day, next door to my plant is Jaffa17 which makes mini Jaffas. On Jaffa18 we also make Jaffa vending packs and Jaffa tubes | 01 Aug 2005 18:48 |
James |
Making Jaffa Cakes 24 Hours a day! How many do you guys churn out then? Also, why Jaffa 17/18, have there been 16 Jaffa Cake-making machines before? (and where can we buy them!) | 01 Aug 2005 18:51 |
pete |
We make around 3343680 cakes a day. The numbers are given to plants as they are built / started. You couldnt buy a machine you would need to buy a mixer, oven, jam depositor, chocolate enrober , collating equipment, wrapping machines and finally cartoners to pack it all. That will be about 12million quid please guv. | 01 Aug 2005 19:03 |
James |
LOL! Now if I could just get my hands on a chocolate enrober... Now presumably the machines sometimes make misshapen Jaffas, what happens to those? | 01 Aug 2005 19:07 |
pete |
Misshapen cakes never happen LOL LOL, but if they do they go to waste. Sometimes they are sold in the staff shop.

LOL you saw exactly where I was going! You said at the start that we can expect new things like berry blast cakes (tell us more!), is there anything else in the pipeline and does the factory make anything else apart from our beloved Jaffas? | 01 Aug 2005 19:16 |
pete |
Berry blast cakes are around in the shops at the moment. These are mixed berry flavour. At Manchester we also make digestive and Peguin biscuits (these are true biscuits and along with Jaffa cakes are some our most popular products. | 01 Aug 2005 19:23 |
James |
Cool, so which one is the most popular of all of McVities many creations? | 01 Aug 2005 19:27 |
pete |
I would say that it is Jaffa cakes, but it is most likely to be Digestive. After i have been on holiday i should be able to get the definitve answer from marketing. | 01 Aug 2005 19:31 |
James |
OK, thanks, and glad you intend to stick around here On a personal note (for me) I'd love to know how you stumbled across this site, and whether you'll be referring any of your co-workers here? (or whether you're enjoying keeping the hero worship to yourself lol) | 01 Aug 2005 19:38 |
pete |
I will answer any questions you wish to put to me if i can. My girlfriend came across your site whilst doing some research for an upcoming interveiw, told me about it and i was hooked because i believe we are all a little bit crazy about the cakes we make. On the night I 1st saw the site I mentioned it to my FGM (Factory General Manager) who found the idea very interesting and asked for the address. I will certainly try and get some like minded people to at least say hello.

Wow that's great, cheers and thanks again for answering all the questions we throw at you! The next question comes from Linz who is trying to bulk buy Jaffa Cakes and wants to know more about pricing, such as what they cost to make. If this is touching on non-public stuff then don't feel you have to answer it. Also, quite a number of people have brought up the idea of a trip to a Jaffa cake factory. Is that done and where can we find out more? | 01 Aug 2005 19:55 |
pete |
I cant realy discuss pricing, bulk buying i can ask around. Factory tours are not realy done but i will be asking tommorow what can be done with regards to the Jafferygoodness fan club. James, if you would like to E-mail me at home with an idea of how many people you are thinking of that would help. We are not insured for children so it would need to be 16 plus i think. | 01 Aug 2005 20:00 |
James |
Thanks! I'll have to find out how many people are interested - Manchester is quite a long trip for me (I'm in Dorset) but we really appreciate you asking I wonder, with all those Jaffas about if you ever get sick of them? (Could you ever?) And also what first brought you to a career in delicious Jaffa Cakes? | 01 Aug 2005 20:06 |
pete |
I never get sick of seeing them but you cant eat to many because too much happines is bad for 1 man. Dont ask me how but i have gone from butchery to printing to at last the mighty jaffa cakes. | 01 Aug 2005 20:12 |
James |
Wow that's quite a CV! You mentioned in another thread that Jaffa 18 makes something like 98% of the world's Jaffas, but where do you export to? Or are Jaffa Cakes UK only? I know I've heard horror stories from visitors from the States about how hard it is to get hold of them Jaffas! | 01 Aug 2005 20:19 |
pete |
We make around 98% of all Mcvities Jaffa cakes, there are other companys making a similar cake to ours. We Export to Spain,France and i suppose some of our cakes end up at the far reachs of the universe. | 01 Aug 2005 20:24 |
James |
Lol, yeah we know about the other "Jaffa Cakes", but they all bow to McVities, as the poll on our front page clearly shows! They kick some serious orange Well, I'm all out of questions, but hopefully you'll stick around the forums to answer a few member questions in the future From me and all the members here, thanks again, and if it's OK with you I'm going to link this thread from the homepage so other people can have a read! All the best. James. | 01 Aug 2005 20:34 |
pete |
